Empty Chair
In his mind, she is smiling and waiting just inside to greet him
He absently struggles with the lock to the front door
Reluctantly, it finally accepts the key and opens
In his mind, she rushes up to welcome him home with a kiss
He catches himself before saying “Honey, I’m home”
He would smile and tell her all about his day
In his mind, the best part of his day is about to begin
The silence inside echoes in waves all around him
He sits heavily in her empty chair by the wall
In his mind, her empty chair lies
She will always be with him
In his mind
