Denise Armstrong - October Storm

A Shiver

Claire looked out the window, vaguely conscious of the light snow fall. Thoughts streaming through her like the sun filtering through the trees in her view. Usually, she was so clear in her thinking – the images, sharp in her mind. But, today … yes – but, today … damn, she couldn’t even keep a train of thought on what was bothering her.

She felt Ethan’s hand stroke her shoulder, as he whispered into her ear “It will be alright Claire.” She recoiled involuntarily at his touch, which surprised them both. No, she thought – it was not going to be alright – at least, not today.

Now, Ethan was looking awkwardly out the window. Claire hated the feeling she had at this moment – but, she couldn’t stop the overwhelming flood of bad thoughts. “You want me to leave?” he asked. She momentarily whirled around to face him and then quickly turned back towards the window – she said nothing.

Ethan stood there for a minute – suddenly numb – he was just an arms reach from her – yet, miles away. He couldn’t fix this, he knew – he had no magic time machine to go back to yesterday. He slowly turned and walked to the foyer. He quietly put on his coat, wrapped his scarf around his neck and pulled his gloves out his pockets.

Before opening the door, he turned to say it … but, the words would not come out.

Claire didn’t hear the door open, but she felt the blast of cold air hit her and then subside – a shiver ran through her body. She continued to stare blankly at the trees lining the edge of the forest in the back.

The sight of Ethan walking into the woods came into her view – and she began to softly cry. Although she willed him to, he never looked back – and all traces of him were erased by the snow fall quickly covering his tracks as he disappeared into the woods.

Childe Hassam - The Sonata

Between the Notes

She closes her eyes – feels his presence
Her fingers silently rest upon the piano keys

He sits – intently watching her – in anticipation
His thoughts flow to the sound of her beauty

Her head rises slightly – she feels him move
As her fingers dance across the piano keys

He closes his eyes – takes in her beauty
The music washes over him in waves

Knowing he hears, she smiles deep inside
She plays to him – in the rhythm of her soul

And between the notes … yes, between the notes
He breathes her in deep – as he hears her beauty

Taras Loboda - lady Red (Adele)

A Voice Within

It starts as a small whisper in her ear
A voice she doesn’t quite know
Yet … something familiar

She purposefully ignores it at first
After all, she is fine … alone
She tells herself – “I am”

How long has it been, she quietly wonders?
The last time she thought about him
But, it really isn’t about him

The voice is something much more
A plea from deep within her
Give love a chance

Her solid walls protect her well
But, now a voice from within
So hard to ignore

And … as he slides his hand in hers
She hears it again – much louder
“Is it right?” she wonders

Yes, he softly whispers in her ear
She feels her voice smile
Yes, hard to ignore…

She, The

She, the piano … He, the player
His fingers dance across her keys

She, the violin … He, the bow
Her strings sing with his touch

She, the clarinet … He, the player
His breath flows through her as music

She … his music

She, the ocean … He, the beach
Her waves gently kiss his along his shores

She, the lake … He, the skipping pebble
Each touch of her surface, a kiss and a ripple

She, the river … He, the leaf
He flows along her surface

She … his stream

She, the elm tree … He, the breeze
Her leaves dance at his touch

She, the whisper … He, the wind
Her spirit resonates within him

She, the flame … He, the air
With his breath, she burns brighter

She … his fire

She, the canvas … He, the artist
With a stroke, his brush brings her to life

She … the color of his dreams
