with a final blaze of defiance, each leaf falls
and even though she knows it must be so
the mother tree still sighs at her loss

Red cardinals dart from branch to branch
Leaves in a dance with the breeze
He reaches for her hand
And the tree smiles

He skips a pebble across her surface
Ripples appear with each touch
She accepts his final kiss
And the lake smiles

A leaf falls from the tree overhead
Takes a predetermined path
Lightly lands in her hair
He simply smiles
